Media Lesson 4 - Diagetic & Non-diagetic Sounds
Diagetic sounds: these are sounds made by sources that are visible on the screen, or sounds that are made to be present by the action that is part of the scene in the film.
· The music using instruments, used in the scene.
· The voices of the characters.
· Sounds made by objects etc in the film.
Diagetic sounds don’t always have to be visible, depends on whether they are included in the shot or not, diagetic sound also called actual sound.
Non-diagetic sounds: a source of sound that has not been made to be present on screen nor in the action.
· Sound effects added to make something more dramatic.
· The narrator’s commentary.
· Mood music.
Sounds which are made to be added, not part of the activity of the scene.
